A Heaven on Earth...

{Jon, Geoff, Gma Allen & me, summer 1994?.}
Dearest Gma Allen-
tomorrow is the first day of April, & i can barely keep up with the seasons as it is. its as if time has stood still since you first left us that somber november day. you are always in my heart & i love having you with me all of the time. however, it is still hard for me to understand your sudden departure.

As you are in heaven, enjoying the choir of angels & being in awe of the glory of God, we continue to struggle in our lives without you.
You see, gma, you were so much apart of our lives, that not a moment goes by without even the smallest of memories coming to our minds. you taught us to live,-- from hours upon hours of jumping on your trampoline, to your famous frozen fruit cups on a warm afternoon-- you are always in our hearts.

i'm afraid the upcoming summer might be the hardest part of all--while our realizations of your departure will be solidified, our summer days, much like our hearts, will never be the same.

but as we are kissed each day by the summer sun, we will surely remember the kisses which you showered upon us constantly.
i have faith though, that with the warm winds i will feel & the beautiful flowers i will admire each day this summer will remind me of the glorious place to which you have been called home

but the loving memories you gave us down here, they are a lot like the heaven i imagine.

i love you so much,
your Anna Banana

the {good old days}.

My oldest nephew nathan decided to spend the night with me this weekend. i love that he calls & invites himself over. his persistence reminds me of when i was a child & seeing this makes me smile. we drew pictures, we ate pizza, we discussed life, upon which he asked me in the sweetest most serious of voices...
"anna, can i sleep in your bed tonight with you like the {good old days} when i was three?"

upon hearing this simple request my heart was flooded with emotion.
-first of the sweet moments of "aunt-hood", then of the speed at which time passes. my heart began to pang with sadness of the minutes elapsed & of memories gone & passed since welcoming the first of 5 babies-- whom would each steal my heart.
but i was quickly brought back to the present & reminded myself that each day brought new adventures
& many {good old days} are yet to be had.

the pangs of my heart grew softer as i drifted off to sleep in a state of nostalgia,
dreaming of the {good old days}.

i'm so happy to sleep i had to blog about it.

logical sense, but i had to share my excitement.
maybe a snowy day tomorrow won't be so bad, a good
excuse to snuggle up in bed all day...

I may not be Irish--but i am Catholic.

all about Saint Patrick via Catholic.org.
Saint PatrickFeastday: March 17
Patron of Ireland

Saint Patrick
Saint Patrick

St. Patrick of Ireland is one of the world's most popular saints.

Apostle of Ireland, born at Kilpatrick, near Dumbarton, in Scotland, in the year 387; died at Saul, Downpatrick, Ireland, 17 March, 461.

Along with St. Nicholas and St. Valentine, the secular world shares our love of these saints. This is also a day when everyone's Irish.

There are many legends and stories of St. Patrick, but this is his story.

Patrick was born around 385 in Scotland, probably Kilpatrick. His parents were Calpurnius and Conchessa, who were Romans living in Britian in charge of the colonies.

As a boy of fourteen or so, he was captured during a raiding party and taken to Ireland as a slave to herd and tend sheep. Ireland at this time was a land of Druids and pagans. He learned the language and practices of the people who held him.

During his captivity, he turned to God in prayer. He wrote

"The love of God and his fear grew in me more and more, as did the faith, and my soul was rosed, so that, in a single day, I have said as many as a hundred prayers and in the night, nearly the same." "I prayed in the woods and on the mountain, even before dawn. I felt no hurt from the snow or ice or rain."

Patrick's captivity lasted until he was twenty, when he escaped after having a dream from God in which he was told to leave Ireland by going to the coast. There he found some sailors who took him back to Britian, where he reunited with his family.

He had another dream in which the people of Ireland were calling out to him "We beg you, holy youth, to come and walk among us once more."

He began his studies for the priesthood. He was ordained by St. Germanus, the Bishop of Auxerre, whom he had studied under for years.

Later, Patrick was ordained a bishop, and was sent to take the Gospel to Ireland. He arrived in Ireland March 25, 433, at Slane. One legend says that he met a chieftain of one of the tribes, who tried to kill Patrick. Patrick converted Dichu (the chieftain) after he was unable to move his arm until he became friendly to Patrick.

Patrick began preaching the Gospel throughout Ireland, converting many. He and his disciples preached and converted thousands and began building churches all over the country. Kings, their families, and entire kingdoms converted to Christianity when hearing Patrick's message.

Patrick by now had many disciples, among them Beningnus, Auxilius, Iserninus, and Fiaac, (all later canonized as well).

Patrick preached and converted all of Ireland for 40 years. He worked many miracles and wrote of his love for God in Confessions. After years of living in poverty, traveling and enduring much suffering he died March 17, 461.

He died at Saul, where he had built the first church.

Why a shamrock?

Patrick used the shamrock to explain the Trinity, and has been associated with him and the Irish since that time.

In His Footsteps:

Patrick was a humble, pious, gentle man, whose love and total devotion to and trust in God should be a shining example to each of us. He feared nothing, not even death, so complete was his trust in God, and of the importance of his mission.

{sometimes i enjoy studying.} --really, i do.

"Queen Victoria of England was a carrier of the gene for hemophilia. She passed the harmful allele for this X-linked trait on to one of her four sons and at least two of her five daughters. Her son Leopold had the disease and died at age 30, while her daughters were only carriers. As a result of marrying into other European royal families, the princesses Alice and Beatrice spread hemophilia to Russia, Germany, and Spain. By the early 20th century, ten of Victoria's descendents had hemophilia. All of them were men, as expected.

By comparison to the X chromosome, the much smaller Y chromosome has only about 26 genes and gene families. Most of the Y chromosome genes are involved with essential cell house-keeping activities (16 genes) and sperm production (9 gene families). Only one of the Y chromosome genes, the SRY gene, is responsible for male anatomical traits. When any of the 9 genes involved in sperm production are missing or defective the result is usually very low sperm counts and subsequent infertility. One in six American couples are infertile. It is now thought that about 1/3 of these couples is unable to have children as a consequence of the male mate not having the necessary sperm producing genes on his Y chromosome.

Because the Y chromosome only experiences recombination with the X chromosome at the ends (as a result of crossing-over), the Y chromosome essentially is reproduced via cloning from one generation to the next. This prevents mutant Y chromosome genes from being eliminated from male genetic lines. Subsequently, most of the human Y chromosome now contains genetic junk rather than genes."

{sweet messages & divine inspirations}

{via: allposters.}
today as i sat in adoration, i began to read today's meditation from my new book
In Conversation with God. I was so excited to see "The Help of the Guardian Angels" at the heading of today's chapter.

as i sat reading His words, in His presence, it all made such perfect sense.
i have a Guardian Angel always here for me
,
yet i have often neglected her presence.

so in response to this Lenten Season, & the reminder that i have a real Guardian Angel with me always, i have decided to start a journal just for her.

& yes, i refer to her as a girl. & yes, i have named her "Francine". I think it suits her. : )

but in all seriousness, i have always known she was there, i just seem to forget from time to time--attempting to take on this big scary world all on my own--Why would i do that if i have such a good friend as Francine by my side, relaying sweet messages and divine inspirations to Him?

Have confidence in your guardian angel. Treat him as a lifelong friend- that is what he is- and he will render you a thousand services in the ordinary affairs of each day.

Just dance. Gonna be okay. Da-doo-doo-doo...

"Just Dance" by lady gaga is one of my cousin Geoff's favorite songs.
i kid you not.
as a matter of fact...
a few weeks ago, while i was chatting with him on the phone i mentioned it was on the radio. two seconds within telling him which station, i heard it blaring in the background, along with hearing him sing, loudly, into the receiver.

& this my loves, is why he is one of my best friends.

he goes to school in KC, and i sit here in lawrence.
i miss him, a lot. everytime something funny happens, i want to call him immediately and tell him so i can hear him laugh. everytime i'm sad i know he'll be there to patiently listen and offer a comforting "i'm sorry that happened, anna" which always helps my heart feel better. everytime something reminds me of being a kid, i am flooded with wonderful memories we share, and everytime my heart pangs with bittersweet emotions.

finally, after a month too long apart, we are hanging out this week & getting dinner. & my befuddled heart couldn't be anymore relieved.
i need an old friend's hug to comfort my worried mind.

so excited!
